Expectorant action. Marshmallow and pleurisy roots as well as other herbs in Dr. Christopher s formulation contain saponins that help to improve the secretory function of the epithelium in the respiratory tract. The herbs are known to reduce cough, liquefy phlegm, and facilitate expectoration.
